Giving you the freedom to engage with a wide range of art practices, this art degree will develop your creative talents in your own, highly individual programme of study.

Essential Info

This art course will develop your creative ability across many different art forms. You will have the freedom to engage with a wide range of art practices, and historical and critical discourses to develop your own, highly individual programme of study.

The course is different from many other fine art courses because it encourages your own practice within a broad range of art forms.

Running in parallel to your studio practice, there are critical and professional studies, which enable you to project your work into contemporary artistic and professional contexts. We organise visits to galleries and museums in the UK and abroad for every level of the course.

What You Will Study

You will be encouraged to think and work across different disciplines, experiencing and understanding the possibilities and benefits of working this way.

Art practice begins with a range of projects involving ceramics, painting, printmaking, drawing, life drawing, 3D mixed media, digital-image making and cross-disciplinary processes. Your personal practice will be informed by the study of historical and contemporary practices and discourses.

In year two, you choose a strand in art practice based on 2D or 3D study and have the opportunity to engage with a live project to gain direct professional experience of project management, collaborative working, presentation, marketing and documentation.

In year three, you are expected to direct the content, pace and ambition of your art practice and theory, with emphasis on independence and self-awareness, leading to a substantial public exhibition.

How You Will Study

You will work in the studio using our specialist facilities. Studio practice is either project-led or self-directed. As well as this, you will have formal lectures, workshops, demonstrations, tutorials, visits to galleries, and talks by visiting speakers.

Teaching Quality

In the most recent national student survey published in 2011, art achieved high ratings for its teaching, and assessment and feedback, receiving the following score from final year undergraduates: 92% agreed that art teaching staff were good at explaining things, 96% agreed that staff provided detailed feedback on their work.
