This film-making degree will allow you to explore the expressive and creative potential of film through different projects, and develop your all-round understanding of the film-making process.

Essential Info

On this film and video degree you will study single-camera and multi-camera video production, edit work using Final Cut Pro, learn to operate a four-camera video studio and have tuition in 16mm film and equipment.

Your studies will explore the expressive and creative potential of film through a variety of narrative and non-narrative projects. To develop your all-round understanding of the film-making process, there are modules in scriptwriting, film theory and new media that will support your practical production work.

We encourage our students to participate in local and national film festivals and they have frequently won prizes for their work.

What You Will Study

In the first year, you will study video production, new media, scriptwriting, and critical approaches to film and screen language. In the second year, you can begin to study areas of particular interest to you and your career aims. These include fiction filmmaking, documentary filmmaking, film producing, short film screenplay, digital media project, Italian and avant-garde cinema. In your final year, you will complete a major film project and progress to write a major screenplay or be part of a collaborative project. There are also optional modules that explore cult cinema and arts cinema.

How You Will Study

You will learn through practical workshops, tutorials, lectures, screenings and seminars, taught by a strong team of professional filmmakers. There are also opportunities to work through the medium of Welsh. Assessment is through a series of practical and written coursework assignments. As we are a lead partner in the Skillset Screen Academy Wales, you will benefit from film industry sponsorship through student bursaries, masterclasses, work placements and excellent industry connections.

Prospects

Possible Career Options

There is a large freelance market for camera, sound and editing personnel, but many graduates get their opportunity through work as runners, second or third assistant directors and in other trainee capacities. Graduates of this course have gone onto careers in the film and television industries as camera or sound assistants, trainee editing, writing and production staff, or some have even started their own business. There is also an increasing need for media producers within the marketing departments of many organisations.
